I'm acquainted with my fears

They writhe like serpents amidst the blaze, eager to flee,

but the fire blinds them, ensnaring them with its venomous arms,

reducing them to ashes without a trace of pity.

It's not me, I reassure myself, it's only the fears of a man—earth,

black thorns that wound my feet, make my mouth bleed,

and pierce my smooth and unblemished skin.

It's not me, I repeat to myself, yet I cease to walk,

cease to speak, and the pains of fear start gnawing at me little by little.

 

Martin Tonalmeyotl, a bilingual poet in Nahuatl and Spanish, takes us on a mystical and mythological journey deeply rooted in southern Mexico. His verses are a hymn to nature, a tribute to the love for the land, and a reflection of a unique worldview forged by profound indigenous thought.

True defeat lies in those who cease to fight; not fighting means giving up on your dreams. Overcoming unhappiness through therapeutic writing can boost self-confidence and provide a sense of control over your own life. This tool promotes personal growth and emotional resilience.
